The rolls are long (typically around 8 feet), which can be awkward to run through a table saw cleanly. Keeping it in a roll helps prevent fraying on the ends — just go slow and steady. Once your sections are cut to the desired drawer length, use a table saw to trim the width. If you have a piece of furniture that looks seriously worn down, you may not need to pull out the heavy duty strippers and fancy scrapers. If all you have available to you is an orbital sander (I love this one), you are more than capable to remove that varnish. I am going to add an extension (literally) to the sander. If you have a shop vac, it is SO helpful to purchase a hose attachment for your sander. If you are doing a one off furniture makeover, you could very well skip this step. But if flipping is becoming your thing, but you aren’t ready to spend upwards of $1000 on the fancy sanders (like Surf Prep or Festool), a simple hose attachment is a lifesaver. Cleaning up all of the dust from sanding can get super messy. So that said, if you don’t have a hose attachment, purchasing proper PPE is also going to help - and make sure you are in a well ventilated space. Circa 1850 in GEL consistency is my go-to. It isn’t a runny liquid, the smell is significantly tolerable compared to others I have used - and the gel consistency is so much better to keep in a thick layer. Using a furniture stripper is a great method for removing thick varnish, paint, or lacquer. This method is much fast than the previous two, but requires proper safety gear and ventilation. When applying this stripper, use a metal scraper. After 15 minutes, scrape the stripper off into a bin. You will also need the scraper when you remove the excess as well. Again, don’t forget your PPE, and some utility gloves so you don’t burn your skin. Here is my go-to strategy: Play with Height - Add decor of varying heights (Lamps, vases, frames, candlesticks, coffeetable books) to create visual interest Layer Textures - Pair hard surfaces with soft textures (ceramics, greenery, woven baskets, wood beads and bowls, fabrics) Keep it Balanced - Style both sides evenly so the piece feels anchored, but avoid making it look overly symmetrical or stiff. Focus on Attractiveness - Use simple, timeless decor that complements but doesn’t overshadow the furniture. Stick to a Theme - If you are styling an MCM piece, stick with modern, minimalist decor. If you have an old vintage dresser, you may lean into tapered candlesticks, vintage chairs, ornate framed art or pictures. Be careful not to blend eras and styles together. You can do this by stripping your piece with a furniture stripper, my favourite is Circa 1870. It is a gel consistency, the least smelly, and works AMAZING. If you are using a sander, I recommend this one! Start with 80 grit, and then work your way up to make sure you get the “pigtails” out. 80-120-180. Once you are confident with the state of your piece, all the piggy swirls are gone, now you are ready for your paint wash! Let’s talk ratios. A lot of people recommend 50:50…. but, I usually lean more to 60:40 - water:paint. You don’t want the paint to cover the wood grain. I always remind myself that the goal is to neutralize - not to cover. If it’s not enough, you can always add more. When choosing a green, you want to lean into lighter shades. Open up your drawer, and find the hardware backings on the inside. Grab a measuring tape and measure from one CENTER to the other CENTER of the screws. It is important that you go from the hole centers as it could add 1/4 - 1/2” and you don’t want your measurement to be wrong. I prefer the Fusion Mineral Paint brand because you do not need to rinse off the cleaner. Wipe down your entire piece with some elbow grease using a lint free cloth. If there is a wax finish on the dresser you will need to use a product called Mineral Spirits to break down the wax. Spray it on, let it sit for a bit, and then clean it off with TSP. I opt for Bondo. It is incredibly durable and sands down beautifully. Using your Bondo, mix the compound with the hardening mix. Follow the instructions on the container for ratio. Once the mixture is made, you need to work quickly as the Bondo will dry and harden quickly. If you are using wood filler, go ahead and fill the holes with wood filler. You will sand the holes down when you are doing your complete scuff sanding of your piece. Best test - run your fingers across the hole. It should feel flush. Continue with your sander and sandpaper in all of the crevices. You do NOT need to sand it down to raw wood. The idea of a scuff sand is to give the piece “Teeth” for the paint to catch onto. You should kick up some dust when you are scuff sanding it, making shiny surfaces dull looking. Didn’t that go so fast? Fortunately, painting is pretty straight forward. If you need to protect the top of your dresser, make sure you tape off the top so you don’t accidentally get paint on your beautifully stripped wood. If you are using a roller, get painting! Try not to go over the same surface too many times to avoid dry rolling. You don’t want a heavily loaded roller either - so offload some of the paint before you start. I prefer a roller to a brush on longer areas like sides, tops, and drawer fronts. I absolutely love the original hardware on these pieces. Don’t worry, I am not just going to refresh some hardware and leave you hanging on the finished piece! DON’T SKIP TO THE END THOUGH! I actually like the Original colour on these pulls. The thing was that they were filthy. Obviously if you are putting in all the work on the rest of the piece, don’t half ass it with the hardware! So, first you will remove your hardware. I like to put the backings back on once the hardware is removed so I don’t lose the screws during the project. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65f7c261dd95ec2c34906914/d8e7674e-129b-4403-81f4-730cfd65424e/IMG_6942.jpg Tutorials - How to refresh vintage hardware - Once you are at the point in your project where you are preparing your hardware, remove the backings and set them somewhere you can find them - Hello red solo cup! Place the hardware in your pot and fill it half way with water. Then get your white vinegar and top it up. Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium high so it can boil the original finish and grime off. Leave it to boil for about 10-15 minutes. Remember to turn on your hood fan - this can get quite stinky. Not gonna lie - I really dislike the smell of vinegar. It also helps if you are using a pot that will not be used again. I have been doing this long enough that this became my sacrificial hardware pot. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65f7c261dd95ec2c34906914/2ec80db4-dc0b-4130-af25-c67fe97ae487/IMG_6997.jpg Tutorials - How to refresh vintage hardware - Remove the pot from the element and drain most of the water. run cold water into the pot to cool it down a bit. I usually let it cool for about 30 minutes or where it is cool enough to handle. Grab your wire brush and get scrubbing! Depending on the finish you want, you may find that your hardware has a beautiful vintage gold colour, so you will probably scrub more off. Otherwise, you are really just scrubbing off any unwanted textures and finishes to get it super clean. The wire bristles also help to create “teeth” in the metal to assist with your new finish to stick better. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65f7c261dd95ec2c34906914/ff63cd63-8fe8-4b90-b713-266043f5df53/IMG_1821.jpg Tutorials - How to refresh vintage hardware - Now you have a clean slate to work with! Wait until the hardware is dry, and then get ready with your finish. Ok, so one time I went overboard for a client with a French Provincial piece offering all the different options I had. But, the reality was, it gave me a reference for the future for customers to see what I can do with the hardware! I can say that the top one is black spray paint, the second one is gold wax, third and fourth are spray paint, the fifth one is a copper wax and the last one is an aging wax. Pro tip - After she decided which one she wanted, I had to start the process over again with the pieces that were spray painted and it was TOUGH to get off. So if you doubt the durability of spray paint on hardware, it is quite durable! As for the wax ones, they weren’t even close to being cured, so a couple squirts of mineral spirits, and it came right off. So which one did she pick? I picked up this highboy with the rest of the bedroom set. I got the entire set for $100! It came with two nightstands, a large Lo Boy and this piece. Highboys are not always the most popular - so my goal here is to make it so darn desirable that someone scoops it up quickly. Now here is another thing to look out for when doing a paint wash. This really only works on wood. Veneer works too! But you have to be careful when you sand veneer - you don’t want burn through. You have to sand the piece down to raw wood. You Cannot just scuff sand. Let me also clarify something for you. French Provincial furniture is often very well built and very heavy. But don’t be mistaken! Just because it is heavy, does NOT mean it is wood! You would be surprised at how heavy MDF is. So make sure it is wood! After 15 minutes (at least), the stripper is ready to come off. It should look bubbly. Grab a scrapper and a garbage bin, and scrape the goo off in the direction of the grain. I use really heavy duty garbage bags so the stripper doesn’t eat through your bag. Otherwise you might have a bigger mess on your hands. This process is incredibly messy but also so satisfying. It is important that if you are working in sections, finish a full strip going with the grain. For example: My piece is about 37” wide. Therefore, I will work along the length of the top going in a straight line for the full 37”. If you stop and pickup the cloth half way through, you will end up with drag lines and you will see the stop and start. Don’t panic if you did this! That is where the mister comes in. Spray your mister over the wash and it will reactivate the paint. run the rag along the entire length again and it will smooth it out. This is going to be a bit of trial and error. I say a couple hours. Enough time to clean up my workspace, grab a Starbucks, and pick up my kids from school! Once the wash is dried, smooth it out with a high grit sandpaper or sanding sponge. Something like 400+ grit works great and won’t leave any marks. I really appreciate the efficiency and even application of top coat when I spray it on using my favourite Sprayer. But you can use a Sponge, brush, or lint free cloth as well. Top Coat will alter the colour ever so slightly. I personally love the richness it gives.
